Yoga: A Wholesome Spiritual Science, Path, Practice & Application for Self-Realisation

Discover the timeless wisdom of Sanātan Yoga and Yoga Chikitsā at Gurukula UK, Portugal & Online

Yoga is far more than a system of physical exercise. It is a complete spiritual science that has guided humanity for thousands of years towards health, harmony, inner peace, wisdom and ultimately Self-realisation (Ātma Jñāna). Rooted in the eternal wisdom of Sanātan Dharma, Yoga offers a practical path for transforming every aspect of life—from physical wellbeing and emotional resilience to spiritual awakening.

At Gurukula UK, Portugal & Online, our Yoga Teacher Training and Yoga Chikitsā (Yoga Therapy) programmes preserve this authentic tradition while integrating modern scientific understanding, making Yoga relevant for today’s world.

What is Yoga?

The Sanskrit word Yoga means union—the harmonious integration of the individual with the universal. According to the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali:

“योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः”

“Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.”

(Yoga Sūtras 1.2)

Yoga is not simply something we do on a mat. It is a holistic lifestyle that integrates:

  • Body (Śarīra)

  • Prāṇa (Vital Energy)

  • Mind (Manas)

  • Intellect (Buddhi)

  • Consciousness (Chaitanya)

Through consistent practice, Yoga enables us to rediscover our true nature beyond the limitations of the body and mind.

Yoga as a Complete Spiritual Science

The ancient Ṛṣis developed Yoga as a systematic science for understanding human existence and realising the highest truth.

Yoga is:

  • A science of self-transformation.

  • A philosophy for righteous living (Dharma).

  • A practical discipline for physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

  • A therapeutic system promoting healing and balance.

  • A path leading from the individual self (Jīvātman) to the Universal Self (Paramātman).

Rather than treating only symptoms, Yoga addresses the whole person by restoring harmony between body, breath, mind and consciousness.

The Many Paths of Yoga

Every individual is unique. For this reason, the sages developed complementary paths suited to different temperaments.

These include:

  • Hatha Yoga

  • Rāja Yoga

  • Karma Yoga

  • Bhakti Yoga

  • Jñāna Yoga

  • Mantra Yoga

  • Tantra Yoga

  • Laya Yoga

Although their methods differ, every authentic path ultimately leads towards the same truth—Self-realisation.
