In today’s fast-paced world, we are constantly encouraged to chase success, possessions, recognition, and personal fulfilment. Yet beneath these pursuits lies a deeper question that every seeker eventually asks:

What is truly real, what is temporary, and how should I live?

Sanātan Dharma, the Eternal Wisdom Tradition of India, offers profound answers through three interconnected teachings:

  • Nitya vs Anitya – The Eternal and the Impermanent

  • Māyā vs Satya – Appearance and Ultimate Truth

  • Authentic vs Righteous – Living True to Yourself or Living According to Dharma

These teachings are not abstract philosophy; they provide practical guidance for living with clarity, purpose, compassion, and inner peace.

Nitya vs Anitya – Learning to Recognise the Eternal

Everything around us is constantly changing.

Our bodies age, relationships evolve, careers change, wealth comes and goes, and emotions rise and fall. These are all Anitya—temporary and impermanent.

Yet within every human being exists something that never changes.

Sanātan Dharma calls this Ātman, the eternal Self.

This is Nitya—the timeless, changeless reality that remains untouched by birth, ageing, success, failure, or death.

When we identify only with the temporary, fear naturally arises. When we recognise the eternal Self, life becomes grounded in peace rather than insecurity.

Māyā vs Satya – Seeing Beyond Appearances

Many people misunderstand Māyā as meaning “the world is an illusion.” However, Sanātan Dharma teaches something much subtler.

Māyā is the tendency to mistake appearances for ultimate reality.

Like the reflection of the moon in a still lake, the world is beautiful and meaningful, yet it is not the complete picture.

Our thoughts, emotions, ego, attachments, and fears can veil our perception of Truth.

Satya is that unchanging Truth—the Divine Reality, Brahman, present within all beings and throughout creation.

Yoga, meditation, self-inquiry, and spiritual discipline help us see beyond appearances and recognise the sacred presence that has always been there.

Authentic or Righteous?

Modern culture often tells us:

“Just be yourself.”

Sanātan Dharma invites us to ask a deeper question:

Who is the ‘self’ that I am expressing?

If our actions arise from anger, fear, pride, greed, or selfish desire, we may be authentic to our emotions, but not aligned with Dharma.

True freedom is not found in expressing every impulse.

It is found in purifying the mind so that our thoughts, words, and actions naturally express wisdom, compassion, truthfulness, and selfless service.

Authenticity becomes truly meaningful only when it reflects our highest nature rather than our conditioning.

This is righteous living—living in harmony with Dharma.

Why These Teachings Matter Today

These timeless principles are more relevant than ever.

They help us:

  • Reduce stress and attachment.

  • Develop inner resilience during change.

  • Make ethical and compassionate decisions.

  • Understand the deeper purpose of Yoga.

  • Cultivate self-awareness and spiritual growth.

  • Live with greater clarity, balance, and peace.

Sanātan Dharma teaches that the purpose of life is not simply to survive or succeed, but to awaken to our true nature.
