A Timeless Mantra from Sanātana Dharma
In the wisdom tradition of Sanātana Dharma, prayer is never limited to personal happiness or individual success. The ancient sages recognised that our own well-being is inseparable from the well-being of all life. When our hearts expand beyond the boundaries of “I” and “mine,” we begin to experience the unity that Yoga teaches.
One of the most beautiful expressions of this universal vision is the Sarveṣāṁ Maṅgala Mantra—a simple yet profound prayer that invokes health, peace, completeness, and auspiciousness for every being.
Rather than asking for blessings only for ourselves, this mantra invites us to become instruments of compassion, harmony, and divine love.
The Mantra
Transliteration

Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ

Literal Translation
Om
May there be well-being for all.
May there be peace for all.
May everyone experience fullness and completeness.
May everyone be blessed with goodness and auspiciousness.
Om. Peace. Peace. Peace.
An Affirmative Translation
Instead of simply asking for blessings, we can contemplate this mantra as an affirmation of our highest intention.
Om.
I affirm health and well-being for all beings.
I affirm peace in every heart and every home.
I affirm that everyone is whole, complete, and fulfilled.
I affirm that goodness, harmony, and divine blessings flow to all.
Om. Peace within me. Peace around me. Peace throughout the universe.
The Deeper Meaning
This mantra reflects one of the fundamental teachings of Sanātana Dharma:
The happiness of one cannot exist without the happiness of all.
When we pray for everyone, our consciousness expands beyond selfishness. We gradually move from Aham (I) to Vayam (We).
This is Yoga.
The purpose of Yoga is not merely flexibility of the body but expansion of consciousness until we recognise ourselves in every living being.
As the Bhagavad Gītā reminds us, the realised yogi sees the same Divine presence everywhere. Such a person naturally wishes for the welfare of all.
Living the Mantra
Repeating this prayer daily is not merely a ritual; it becomes a way of life.
Every repetition plants seeds of:
Compassion (Karuṇā)
Loving-kindness (Maitrī)
Inner peace (Śānti)
Selfless service (Sevā)
Universal love
Harmony with nature
Gratitude
Spiritual awakening
The more we repeat the mantra with sincerity, the more these qualities begin to manifest in our thoughts, words, and actions.
A Daily Practice
Sit comfortably.
Close your eyes.
Bring your awareness to the heart.
Take a few slow, gentle breaths.
Repeat the mantra three, nine, or twenty-seven times.
As you chant each line, visualise its blessing spreading:
To yourself
To your family
To your community
To every nation
To every living being
To the entire universe
Allow your heart to become a source of peace rather than a seeker of peace.
The Threefold Peace
The mantra concludes with:
Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ
Traditionally, the three invocations of peace represent freedom from three sources of suffering:
Ādhyātmika – disturbances arising from within ourselves, such as illness, fear, anxiety, or inner conflict.
Ādhibhautika – disturbances arising from the external world, including other people, animals, or the environment.
Ādhidaivika – disturbances arising from natural or cosmic forces beyond our control.
By invoking peace three times, we pray for harmony in every dimension of life.
A Universal Message for Humanity
In a world often divided by differences, the Sarveṣāṁ Maṅgala Mantra reminds us that humanity shares one destiny.
Health is meaningful when all are healthy.
Peace is lasting when all experience peace.
Prosperity becomes sacred when it benefits everyone.
True spirituality is measured not by what we accumulate, but by how much love, kindness, and well-being we bring into the lives of others.
May this timeless prayer inspire us to live with compassion, wisdom, and selfless service, becoming instruments of harmony wherever we go.
Om Sarveṣāṁ Maṅgalaṁ Bhavatu.
Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ.
