Key Vedic Scriptures Followed in Sanatan Yoga Teachings

Sanatan Yoga is the holistic path that integrates body, mind, and spirit.

Whilst the wisdom that it's comprised of comes from many different texts. For example, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Hatha Yoga Pradipika are often considered the main texts, a complete understanding of Sanatan Yoga draws from many sacred scriptures. These texts provide guidance on philosophy, meditation, ethics, postures, breathwork, and spiritual practices.

At Yoga Gurukula UK, we follow these key scriptures in our teachings:

•Yoga Sutras of Patanjali – The foundational text on yoga philosophy, outlining the eight limbs of yoga, obstacles, and practices for self-realisation.

•Bhagavad Gita – A poetic dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, teaching Dharma, Karma Yoga, Bhakti, and meditation.

•Shiva Samhita – Lord Shiva instructs Parvati on yoga postures, Prana, Tantra, Mudra, meditation, and philosophy.

•Hatha Yoga Pradipika – A practical guide to Hatha Yoga, preparing the body for Raja Yoga and spiritual awakening.

•Gheranda Samhita – A detailed manual on Hatha Yoga, including Shatkarmas, Asana, Mudra, Pratyahara, Pranayama, Dhyana, and Samadhi.

•Yoga Vashistha – A dialogue between Lord Rama and Sage Vasishtha, containing inspiring stories of liberation through yoga.

•Shiva Swarodaya – Advanced teachings on breath (Swaras) and their connection to mind, body, and consciousness.

•Yoga Upanishads – Ancient texts exploring meditation, philosophy, and self-realisation.

•Vijnana Bhairava Tantra – Classical Tantra text with 112 techniques of meditation and self-enquiry.

•Yoga Chudamani – “Crown Jewel of Yoga,” guiding breath, mantra (Ajapa Japa), and Kundalini awakening.

•Yajnavalkya Samhita – A dialogue on Hatha Yoga between Sage Yajnavalkya and his wife Gargi.

•Yoga Step by Step by Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giriji – A modern classical course covering Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Pranayama, meditation, lifestyle, and human physiology.
